Real Madrid confirmed on Wednesday that its star player, Kylian Mbappé, will not take part in the team’s first match of the 2026 season against Real Betis after suffering a left knee injury diagnosed following medical tests. The club explained that it is a knee sprain, and although his recovery will depend on how the injury progresses, the French forward is a confirmed absence for the league opener.

This setback comes at a crucial time as the Merengues aim to start the year strongly and remain competitive in LaLiga, where they are just a few points behind the leaders. In addition, Mbappé is also a doubt in the Spanish Super Cup clash against Atlético de Madrid in January, a key tournament for the club.

The Frenchman, Real Madrid’s top scorer in 2025 with 39 goals, is a vital part of the attack, and his absence at the start of the year poses a challenge for head coach Xabi Alonso and the squad.

How long could Mbappé be sidelined?

Although the initial diagnosis points to a knee sprain and his return will depend on his recovery, early reports suggest he could miss several weeks of action, including important matches at the beginning of 2026.
