The Tampa Bay Rays are getting closer to having a new home. The Tampa City Council approved, by a 4-3 vote, a deal valued at $2.3 billion to build a modern baseball stadium, financed through a combination of public and private funds.
The ambitious project includes up to $967 million in public funding, while the Rays will cover a significant portion of the investment. The new stadium would also be surrounded by an entertainment district and mixed-use developments on land connected to Hillsborough College.

The approval represents an important step forward, although the Hillsborough County commissioners still need to vote on the project, which is expected to be the next major step.
The Rays have played at Tropicana Field since joining Major League Baseball in 1998, but the franchise is now looking to secure its long-term future in the Tampa region.
