AliExpress is facing one of the biggest challenges in its history in Europe. The European Commission has imposed a €550 million fine on the e-commerce platform after determining that it failed to take the necessary measures to prevent the sale of illegal, unsafe, and counterfeit products on its marketplace.

The investigation concluded that the company did not implement sufficiently effective mechanisms to detect and remove dangerous items and failed to act promptly against repeat offenders. Among the products identified were unsafe toys, hazardous cosmetics, and counterfeit goods that remained available to millions of European consumers.

The company has expressed its disagreement with the decision and is considering filing an appeal, while European authorities have required it to implement corrective measures before next October.

What does this fine mean for consumers?

The penalty is intended to strengthen the safety of online shopping and require major digital platforms to provide greater guarantees regarding the products they sell, thereby protecting millions of consumers around the world.

The European Commission has also ordered AliExpress to submit an action plan to address the identified deficiencies as part of its obligations under the Digital Services Act.
