Meta to limit Instagram and Facebook use for teenagers with new nighttime restrictions

1 Min Read

Meta will introduce new restrictions for teenagers on Instagram and Facebook as part of an agreement reached with attorneys general from several U.S. states. The measures are intended to reduce the amount of time minors spend on the platforms and strengthen youth safety tools.

Among the planned changes is a two-hour daily usage limit and blocked access during overnight hours, specifically between midnight and 6:00 a.m., unless parents provide authorization. The measures also include reducing most notifications during school hours.

The decision comes amid growing legal pressure on Meta Platforms, which has faced allegations from several states that its social media platforms were designed to encourage excessive use among minors. The company has denied wrongdoing and says it has already developed various tools to improve teenage safety.

Why will Meta restrict nighttime access?

The goal is to reduce excessive social media use during sleeping hours while giving parents and guardians greater control over how teenagers use Instagram and Facebook.

The new measures could represent a significant change in the way young people interact with the platforms as pressure grows for stronger regulation of social media.
