Artificial sweeteners, commonly found in beverages, desserts, and everyday medications, are once again the subject of scientific research. Researchers at the University of Cambridge have discovered that many of these compounds can alter the growth of gut bacteria that are essential for the body’s proper functioning.

The study analyzed 39 different sweeteners and found that nearly three-quarters affected at least one bacterial species. In addition, some of their effects became more pronounced when combined with commonly used medications, potentially influencing processes related to immune response and blood sugar regulation.

Although scientists emphasize that the research was conducted in laboratory settings and that further studies in humans are still needed, the findings raise new questions about the everyday consumption of these products.

Should we stop consuming artificial sweeteners?

Not necessarily. Experts recommend moderation and stress that more research is needed to determine their long-term impact on human health.
