In an unexpected twist after his retirement, MLB legend Clayton Kershaw has agreed to join Team USA for the upcoming 2026 World Baseball Classic, USA Baseball announced. The left-hander will represent his country in what could be his final competitive appearance on the mound, marking his first participation in the tournament after missing the 2023 edition due to insurance issues.

At 37 years old, Kershaw retired after winning the 2025 World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers, closing a brilliant career that included three Cy Young Awards, an MVP, and more than 3,000 strikeouts. Despite stepping away from MLB, the veteran pitcher chose to bring his experience to a powerful U.S. pitching staff that will also feature stars such as Paul Skenes, Tarik Skubal, Logan Webb, Joe Ryan, and Clay Holmes.

Team USA will open its World Baseball Classic campaign on March 6 in Houston against Brazil, as part of Group B. Kershaw’s presence raises expectations and adds leadership to the roster.

Will Kershaw be a starter or a reliever in the Classic?

Most likely a reliever. Given his age and recent workload management, the coaching staff could use him in short outings to maximize his impact in key moments.
