The popular messaging app WhatsApp has announced that it will no longer be compatible with several smartphone models starting January 1, 2026. This decision is part of the platform’s effort to maintain high standards of security, performance, and support for new features, leaving behind devices that run outdated operating systems and no longer receive updates.
The change will mainly affect phones running Android 5.0 Lollipop or earlier, as well as Apple devices operating on iOS 15.1 or older. Many of the affected models were once widely used, but are now considered obsolete for the app’s current technical requirements.

Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, explained that ending support for older devices will allow developers to focus on more advanced features without compromising the stability or security of the service for users with newer phones.
What should affected users do?
If your phone will no longer be supported, you will need to upgrade your operating system or switch to a newer device to continue using WhatsApp and keep your chats and personal data secure.
