Google has just released a free update to its Google Photos app, introducing generative AI features that were previously exclusive to paid services like Gemini. Among the most eye-catching additions: the ability to turn static images into short videos and transform photos into anime, comic book, or 3D-style artwork.

One of the standout tools is “Photo to Video“, which converts any still image into a six-second animated clip. Users can choose between subtle movement effects, like a smile or a blink, or opt for the creative “I’m Feeling Lucky” mode, where the AI decides how to animate the scene.

Another highlight is the “Remix” feature, similar to tools available in AI platforms like ChatGPT. It allows users to reinterpret their photos in various visual styles such as anime, retro, comic, or even 3D, all with a single tap and no editing skills required.

To make these features easier to find, Google has added a new “Create” tab to the app’s bottom navigation bar. That section gathers all AI-powered creative tools in one place. The update is now rolling out to Android and iOS users in the U.S., with global expansion expected in the coming weeks.

What does this update bring?

It empowers users to transform their photos into animated or artistically styled content easily and at no extra cost. Backed by Google’s latest Veo 2 generative AI technology, these features make advanced editing tools accessible to everyone, no subscriptions, no complicated software.

With this update, Google Photos reinforces its leadership in mobile AI-driven photo editing, bringing powerful creative tools to the hands of everyday users.
