Recently, a passenger train traveling the route between Havana and Sancti Spíritus derailed near the municipality of Placetas, in the province of Villa Clara, just one day after the national railway service resumed in Cuba. The accident, which occurred around 7:30 a.m., involved the well-known “El Espirituano” train, whose second carriage partially came off the tracks after traveling about 500 meters from the Cumbre station.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the roughly 80 passengers on board, who were transported by bus to their final destination. Railway authorities stated that efforts are already underway to restore the tracks and determine the cause of the incident.

The Havana–Sancti Spíritus train derails just after the resumption of railway service

Does this accident reflect the poor condition of Cuba’s railway system?

All signs point to yes. The lack of maintenance, the age of the rolling stock, and limited resources have caused derailments to become increasingly common, undermining both safety and public confidence.

This latest episode adds to a long list of issues that call into question the reliability of the island’s rail transport system.
