Massive refunds shake the United States after historic ruling on tariffs

The administration of Donald Trump has begun an unprecedented process: returning nearly $166 billion in tariffs that were improperly collected from thousands of companies. The move follows a ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States, which declared these tariffs illegal, forcing the government to reverse one of the key pillars of its trade policy.

The refund system, managed by United States Customs and Border Protection, will allow more than 56,000 companies to claim their money, including major retail corporations. Payments will be made in phases and could take between 60 and 90 days after each claim is approved.

Massive refunds shake the United States after historic ruling on tariffs

This program is considered the largest refund process in the country’s history and represents a significant impact on public finances, especially amid a growing deficit.

Who will receive these refunds?

Primarily importing companies that paid the tariffs, not consumers, although related legal cases are still ongoing. As the process moves forward, one key question remains: will this mark the end of an era of aggressive trade policies, or just a pause in the United States’ economic strategy?
