Brazilian authorities have sentenced a former Catholic priest to 24 years and nine months in prison after finding him guilty of the rape of a minor, in a case that has caused strong social and judicial impact. The ruling was issued by a court in the state of Minas Gerais, after confirming the events that took place in 2016.
According to the investigation, the abuse occurred while the victim was still underage and in a situation of particular vulnerability, which contributed to the severity of the sentence. In addition to the prison term, the former clergyman was ordered to financially compensate the victim for the harm caused.
The accused had already been removed from the priesthood years earlier following multiple complaints of inappropriate behavior, although this sentence focuses on a single case proven in court.
