The celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence have sparked unexpected controversy in Italy. The arrival of United States Ambassador Tilman Fertitta aboard his luxury superyacht has drawn criticism from hundreds of demonstrators in Venice, who have questioned the extravagance of the event and the extensive security measures surrounding it.
The so-called “Freedom 250 Coastal Diplomacy Tour” will travel through several Italian cities with the goal of strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations. However, various groups argue that the initiative symbolizes excessive luxury in a city already grappling with the challenges of mass tourism and the preservation of its historic heritage.

The protests remained largely peaceful throughout the day, while Italian authorities reinforced security around the port area.
Why have the demonstrations taken place?
Protesters have criticized the large logistical operation and argue that the event represents a disproportionate use of public resources to protect a private vessel during diplomatic celebrations.
