The Chicago Cubs have made a major move in the 2025–26 MLB offseason by acquiring right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins in a trade that strengthens their rotation ahead of next season. The 27-year-old comes off the best year of his Major League career, posting a 3.53 ERA in 26 starts, showing clear improvements in command and pitch mix.

As part of the deal, the Cubs sent young outfielder Owen Caissie along with other prospects to Miami, in what many analysts see as a calculated move to add a high-impact arm to the pitching staff.

Cabrera, who remains under team control through the 2028 season, brings depth and experience to a rotation that already features Javier Assad and Justin Steele. His arrival could be key for Chicago’s push toward postseason contention.

Additionally, his relatively affordable contract compared to top free agents allows the Cubs to maintain financial flexibility to reinforce other areas of the roster.

Can Cabrera become the ace Chicago needs?

It depends. He has shown flashes of elite potential, but injuries have been a recurring concern, making his health the determining factor.
