Three deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) were killed on Friday in a tragic “critical workplace incident” following an explosion at a department training facility, according to local and federal authorities.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed the news in a post on social media platform X, calling it a “horrific incident” and asking for prayers for the families of the fallen deputies. “Our federal agents are on the scene, and we are working to gather more information,” she added.

The incident occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m. local time at the Biscailuz Center Training Academy, located about six miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The facility houses special units of the department, including the bomb squad.

According to a statement from LASD, homicide detectives are on-site, and while the incident is believed to have been accidental, the exact circumstances remain under investigation. A law enforcement source told CNN it is unclear whether the explosion occurred during a training session or while handling evidence.

Both the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) have deployed agents to assist in the investigation. Additionally, teams from the Los Angeles Fire Department and the LAPD bomb squad are providing support at the facility.

Authorities noted that one of the primary concerns for bomb technicians is ensuring no other explosive materials stored on-site are at risk of detonation.

“I’m devastated by the terrible tragedy that occurred today at a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department facility,” said Kathryn Barger, Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, in a statement. “My thoughts are with the brave men and women of LASD during this incredibly difficult time. We stand with them and with their families as they face the difficult hours and days ahead.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
