Xbox has made one of its biggest changes in years, announcing that Activision, the company behind Call of Duty, will develop the next major Halo title.
The decision is part of a broader restructuring at Microsoft, which is reorganizing its gaming studios into fewer business units. According to Xbox, Activision will lead a new team created specifically for Halo, separate from the developers working on Call of Duty.

The move is particularly notable because Halo has been closely connected to Xbox since the console launched in 2001. The franchise played a major role in establishing Microsoft’s position in the console gaming market.
Why is Activision taking control of Halo?
Microsoft says the restructuring is intended to strengthen its major franchises and improve how its studios operate.
Meanwhile, a smaller team at Halo Studios will continue supporting existing Halo games and their communities. The announcement comes alongside significant changes across Microsoft’s gaming division, including layoffs and studio reorganizations.
For Xbox fans, the biggest question now is what Activision’s new Halo team will bring to one of Microsoft’s most recognizable franchises.
