The Donald Trump administration announced that it has halted all asylum decisions and paused the issuance of visas for Afghan citizens following the armed attack that left one member of the National Guard of the United States dead and another injured near the White House.

The director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) stated that the measure will remain in place “until every foreign national is investigated and evaluated to the highest degree possible.”

The United States suspends asylum decisions after shooting near the White House

This decision directly impacts tens of thousands of people whose cases were already in progress; applications that might have been approved before are now on hold as the government reviews its security protocols.

What does this pause mean for asylum seekers?

It means uncertainty, many may face long delays, indefinite suspensions, or even the cancellation of their applications. In the meantime, their hopes of receiving protection remain on standby while the government reinforces security checks and immigration controls.
