Teotihuacán reopens after tragedy as visitors return with doubt and hope

1 Min Read

The iconic archaeological site of Teotihuacán has reopened just two days after a tragic shooting that left one tourist dead and more than a dozen people injured.

Despite the shock, dozens of visitors, many of them foreigners, have returned to the site, though with mixed feelings. Some admitted they had doubts about coming but ultimately trusted that the incident was isolated.

The reopening took place under strict security measures, with a strong police presence and new controls aimed at preventing another similar event. As a symbolic gesture, entry was free on the first day.

The return of tourists also brings relief to local vendors, who feared an economic blow similar to what they experienced during the pandemic.

Is it safe to visit Teotihuacán after what happened?

Authorities say yes, citing reinforced security and newly implemented safety protocols at the site.

Even so, one question remains: can one of Mexico’s most important destinations fully regain visitors’ trust?
