James Harden will remain with the Cleveland Cavaliers after reaching an agreement on a three-year, $97 million contract, according to ESPN. The deal includes a player option for the 2028-29 season and a clause that would allow him to receive additional compensation if he is traded.

The extension represents an important decision for Cleveland, which views Harden as a key part of its project alongside Donovan Mitchell. The veteran guard joined the team during the previous season and quickly took on an important role in creating offense.

During his 26 regular-season games with the Cavaliers, Harden averaged 20.5 points and 7.7 assists, showing that he can still make a significant impact despite being in the later stages of his career.

The agreement also gives Cleveland greater financial flexibility. Harden had previously declined a $42.3 million player option for the 2026-27 season in order to pursue a longer-term deal.

Why did Harden decide to stay in Cleveland?

The player was looking for long-term stability, while the Cavaliers needed to retain an experienced offensive creator to compete in the Eastern Conference.

With this move, the Cleveland Cavaliers retain one of their key offensive pieces and strengthen their intention to compete near the top of the NBA once again.
