The government of India has begun diplomatic talks with the United States to obtain authorization to import Venezuelan crude as an alternative to Russian oil, amid a complex geopolitical environment and ongoing sanctions on Russia. The goal is to establish a “safe corridor” free of financial penalties to secure New Delhi’s energy supply.

India, the world’s third-largest oil consumer, has seen its purchases of Russian crude decline in recent weeks compared to peak levels in 2025. As a result, Indian refineries are looking for an immediate source of heavy crude to keep their facilities operating efficiently.

The negotiations also include renewed dialogue between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, signaling a potential strengthening of energy cooperation between the two countries.

This move comes as the United States has indicated it could allow India to resume Venezuelan oil imports as part of a broader strategy to replace Russian supplies, possibly through easing sanctions or creating mechanisms to avoid financial retaliation.

Why is India seeking this approval?

To diversify its oil sources and secure heavy crude supplies without facing sanctions or commercial penalties.
