Guatemalan authorities have ordered new evacuations in communities near the Volcano of Fire after a significant increase in eruptive activity. The volcano has produced towering ash plumes, lava flows, and volcanic mudflows, prompting officials to raise the alert level and evacuate hundreds of families as a precautionary measure.
Emergency response teams remain deployed in the areas at greatest risk while closely monitoring the volcano, which is considered one of the most active in Central America. In addition to the evacuations, authorities suspended classes in several nearby communities and closed a major highway to protect residents and motorists. They also warned that forecasted rainfall could trigger additional lahars, further increasing the danger in the coming days.
Why does the Volcano of Fire remain a constant threat?
Because of its frequent eruptive activity, which can quickly produce ashfall, pyroclastic flows, and lahars capable of severely impacting nearby communities, even after volcanic activity appears to decrease.
