Recently, a newly approved law in the state of Florida will impose severe penalties on drivers with modified or covered license plates, issuing fines of up to $1,000 and even up to one year in jail in certain cases.
The regulation explicitly prohibits decorative frames, covers, stickers, sprays, or any object that obstructs the visibility of vehicle plates. Authorities classify this as a first-degree misdemeanor and warn that the measure aims to make it easier to identify vehicles through toll systems, traffic cameras, or police investigations.

The law will take effect in October 2026. Although authorities will initially prioritize education and warnings, those who continue to violate the rule may face financial and criminal penalties.
What does this mean for Florida drivers?
It means that something as simple as a decorative frame or tinted plate cover will no longer be a minor detail: ignoring the law could cost you far more than a fine, even jail time.
