FIFA has announced severe disciplinary measures following the incidents that occurred after the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, with several players and officials receiving suspensions.

The harshest punishment went to Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes, who was suspended for 10 matches and fined $90,000 for his involvement in the confrontation with Spain’s Gavi. Nahuel Molina received a seven-match suspension and the same fine after his clash with Rodri. Thiago Almada was suspended for one match and fined $30,000, while Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala received a three-match ban and a $30,000 fine. Spain’s Gavi was also suspended for one match and fined $30,000.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) was also punished with fines totaling $321,000 for several disciplinary violations, including discriminatory chants and gestures by supporters and the display of a political banner. FIFA also ordered Argentina to play its next two home matches with stadium capacity limited to 50%.

How serious are the consequences for Argentina?

The sanctions could significantly affect the national team’s upcoming matches, particularly because Paredes and Molina will be unavailable for several games.

The decisions can still be appealed, meaning the final disciplinary situation could change.
