Passion for basketball boiled over this Sunday in Managua in the Americup:

The Dominican Republic defeated Argentina 84-83 in a dramatic clash that was decided in overtime, but what should have been a moment of celebration ended in a physical confrontation between both teams. The tension built throughout the game, with missed passes, intense defense, and a tight scoreboard in the final minutes, finally exploded just after the final whistle, when a shove between players turned into a brawl at midcourt.

David Jones-García, the standout of the match, reacted with a punch that quickly escalated the hostile atmosphere, leading to unfortunate scenes. Several players exchanged shoves and blows, while Argentine forward Gonzalo Bressan left the court showing clear signs of having been struck. The fight lasted only seconds, but it left a strong mark on the tournament and raised concerns within the AmeriCup organization.

What consequences could the Dominican Republic face after the altercation?

It is likely that FIBA will intervene with sanctions and suspensions for those involved, including Jones-García. The team, which secured a spot in the quarterfinals with the win, will now have to refocus and channel its energy back into basketball, leaving off-court distractions behind.
