A recent study on food prices in the United States has shaken up the retail market, Walmart is no longer the cheapest supermarket in the country. According to an analysis commissioned by Consumer Reports, Costco now ranks as the most affordable option for consumers.
The report compared grocery baskets across several U.S. cities, including Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, and Los Angeles. The results showed that Costco can offer average prices up to 21.4% lower than Walmart, especially when purchasing items in bulk.

Other chains also appear with competitive pricing, such as BJ’s Wholesale Club, Lidl, and Aldi, which have gained ground as food inflation continues to impact American households. For many shoppers, these stores represent a more affordable alternative for everyday essentials like meat, fruits, vegetables, and packaged foods.
Although Walmart remains one of the largest retail giants, this shift highlights how competition and changing shopping habits are transforming the grocery market.
Why can Costco be cheaper than Walmart?
Mainly because it sells products in large quantities and operates with lower margins, allowing it to offer lower prices per unit to consumers.
