Former U.S. Congressman George Santos received an unprecedented sanction from Kalshi, the prediction market platform, which decided to permanently ban him and impose a $71,356 fine following an investigation into bets related to his attendance at the State of the Union address.

According to Kalshi, Santos placed trades linked to the event and made statements on social media that could have influenced contract prices. He ultimately did not attend the speech and earned approximately $17,839 in profits. The company determined that, because of his ability to directly influence the outcome, he could not participate in that market.

Was this the first time Kalshi imposed a ban of this kind?

Yes. The company confirmed that Santos is the first person to be permanently banned from its platform, while it also temporarily sanctioned other candidates accused of betting on their own campaigns.

The case once again puts the growing prediction market industry under scrutiny, highlighting the risks of using insider information in political betting.
