The 2026 Vuelta a España suffered an unexpected setback this Saturday after Tadej Pogačar was forced to abandon the race following a serious crash during Stage 8.
The Slovenian cyclist, who was leading the overall standings and was considered the favorite to win the competition, crashed with just over 30 kilometers remaining before the finish in Xeraco. Pogačar suffered injuries to his left shoulder, along with a head injury and a possible collarbone fracture, according to initial medical reports.
The UAE Team Emirates rider attempted to get back on his bicycle, but the pain prevented him from continuing. He was eventually taken by ambulance to a hospital for further medical evaluations.

Spanish cyclist Enric Mas of Movistar moved into first place in the general classification, while Primož Roglič moved into second.
Pogačar’s withdrawal is a major blow for the Slovenian, who was hoping to win the only Grand Tour still missing from his impressive career record.
