Candida auris, a fungus that can cause serious infections, continues to be closely monitored by U.S. health authorities. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 3,437 clinical cases had been reported nationwide as of July 25, 2026.
The fungus is particularly concerning in healthcare settings, where it can affect people with complex medical conditions, prolonged hospital stays, or certain medical devices. Some strains can also be resistant to antifungal medications, making treatment more difficult.
California leads the 2026 case count with 873 cases, followed by Texas with 433 and Tennessee with 283. Although the numbers remain high, the data indicates that the rate of increase has slowed compared with previous years.
Is Candida auris dangerous?
It can be, particularly for vulnerable patients. However, many cases can be treated with antifungal medications, while health authorities continue monitoring the fungus and promoting prevention measures in healthcare facilities.
