“I might impose tariffs on countries if they don’t accept the Greenland plan, because we need Greenland for national security reasons,” Donald Trump said during a White House roundtable focused on rural health issues. He added that control over the Arctic island is key to countering potential threats from powers such as China and Russia.
The remarks come amid rising diplomatic tensions with European allies, who have firmly rejected any attempt to alter Greenland’s status without the consent of Denmark and the island’s own authorities. Several European countries have increased their military presence in the region and reiterated their support for Danish sovereignty.
