The Arizona Diamondbacks are going through a difficult stretch as they fight to remain in the playoff race. The situation became more complicated after the unexpected absence of Ketel Marte, who did not report for a game during the team’s series in Boston.
Manager Torey Lovullo admitted that he was initially deeply frustrated and said he felt “betrayed” by what happened. However, after speaking with Marte, general manager Mike Hazen, and the player’s agent, Lovullo said his relationship with the Dominican star would not change.
Marte, 32, was later placed on the 10-day injured list because of inflammation in his left knee. The player had previously expressed frustration over the physical problems he had been dealing with.
Why did Marte’s absence cause so much concern?
It happened during a crucial part of the season while the Diamondbacks were fighting for a postseason spot, leaving teammates and team officials searching for answers. Several players acknowledged that they learned much of the situation through the media.
Lovullo insisted that he wants to put the controversy behind him and focus on baseball, while the Diamondbacks hope to have one of their key hitters back for the final stretch of the season.
