A recent study conducted by the universities of Bielefeld and Warwick, and published in Scientific Reports, confirms what many already suspected: a morning cup of coffee significantly improves mood. Researchers monitored the emotions of young adults in real time over several weeks and found that drinking caffeinated coffee greatly enhances feelings of happiness and enthusiasm during the first 2.5 hours after waking. This effect remains even in people suffering from anxiety, depression, or sleep disorders.

The mechanism behind this emotional boost lies in caffeine, which blocks adenosine receptors and promotes dopamine activity in key areas of the brain, resulting in greater alertness and energy. In addition, Harvard studies indicate that moderate coffee consumption (between 2 and 5 cups per day) is linked to important health benefits, including reduced risks of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

Does this mean we should always start our day with coffee?

It might be a good idea: enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning provides an emotional lift backed by science. However, as with everything in nutrition, moderation is key. Drinking it as part of a healthy routine is the most recommended approach.
