For the first time since 2019, Chicago O’Hare International Airport topped the list of the busiest airports in the United States in 2025, according to data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). O’Hare recorded 857,392 takeoffs and landings, surpassing the longtime leader, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which had held first place in 2024.
This result reflects not only Chicago’s growth as a logistics and air-connection hub, but also the surge in domestic travel and connecting flights that fuel the airport’s traffic. O’Hare is one of the main hubs for United Airlines and American Airlines.
The airport features 201 boarding gates, a wide range of commercial services, and expansion projects aimed at further increasing its capacity in the coming years.
Other airports with the highest traffic in 2025 include Dallas–Fort Worth, Denver International, and Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, underscoring the continued growth of air travel across the country.
What does it mean that O’Hare is now the busiest airport?
It means the United States is seeing a shift in its air transportation hubs, with Chicago regaining prominence and reflecting the recovery and expansion of the travel sector after the pandemic.
