NASA astronaut Ron Garan drew attention after sharing a powerful reflection following the 178 days he spent in space aboard the International Space Station. During that time, he orbited the Earth thousands of times and observed the planet from a unique perspective.
According to Garan, seeing Earth from space made him realize something surprising: many of humanity’s priorities may be misplaced. The astronaut explained that from orbit it can feel like “we are living a lie,” because society often prioritizes economic growth over protecting the planet and its natural systems.
From space, he said, it becomes clear how fragile Earth’s atmosphere really is. That thin layer surrounding the planet is what makes life possible, which led him to reflect on the importance of protecting the environment and rethinking how humanity organizes its priorities.
What did the astronaut mean when he said that “we are living a lie”?
Garan explained that from space it becomes obvious that humanity often prioritizes the economy and constant growth over the health of the planet. For him, the “lie” is believing that Earth’s resources are unlimited, when in reality the planet is fragile and depends on humans protecting it for future generations.
