Iberia has postponed the return of its direct flights between Spain and Cuba, extending the suspension until at least June 2027 as the island continues to face a severe energy and fuel crisis. The Spanish airline had previously left open the possibility of resuming the Madrid-Havana route in November 2026, but that plan has now been delayed.
According to Iberia, the situation in Cuba has significantly affected passenger demand and the conditions required to maintain regular operations. The airline had already been forced to make technical stops to refuel during return flights to Madrid before eventually suspending the direct route completely in June.
The decision represents another setback for Cuba’s tourism industry, which has also been affected by declining international arrivals and reduced hotel occupancy. Several other international airlines have also modified or suspended their operations on the island amid fuel shortages.
When will Iberia return to Cuba?
The airline currently does not plan to resume direct flights before June 2027, although the date will depend on whether operating conditions improve. In the meantime, passengers can travel through Panama and continue to Cuba through a codeshare agreement between Iberia and Copa Airlines.
Iberia has emphasized that it maintains a historic commitment to Cuba, dating back to its first flight to the island in 1949, and hopes to restore direct operations when conditions allow.
