The Boston Red Sox have locked in their star reliever Aroldis Chapman for the 2026 season, signing him to a guaranteed $13.3 million contract, which includes a conditional option for 2027 if the pitcher reaches a certain number of innings.

Chapman, now 37, has had a brilliant season in his debut with Boston. He has posted a career-low 1.02 ERA, recording 74 strikeouts and 26 saves over 52 innings pitched. His performance has been so outstanding that, even at his age, he continues to throw with impressive velocity and command, maintaining an elite level of competition.

The deal also includes the potential to earn $26 million across two seasons, provided Chapman surpasses 40 innings in 2026. If he falls short, he will still receive a minimum compensation clause of $300,000, unless both sides agree otherwise.

Why did Boston decide to close this deal now?

Because they didn’t want to risk losing the franchise’s favorite closer to free agency. His chemistry with the team and his extraordinary season pushed management to act early.
