Burgers are experiencing a major boom in China, where they have gone from being a niche Western product to becoming a common choice for millions of consumers. The growth is driven, among other factors, by demand for affordable, fast, and convenient meals.
China’s Western-style fast-food market reached a value of 499.65 billion yuan in 2025 and could grow to 587.09 billion yuan by 2027. Within this sector, the burger market was valued at approximately $18.4 billion and is expected to grow by 8.7% annually through 2035.
This situation is creating intense competition. Local companies such as Haidilao and M Stand are entering the burger business, while international giants including McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC, Five Guys, and Pizza Hut are looking to strengthen their positions.
The arrival of Five Guys in Beijing generated particular excitement, with some customers reportedly waiting more than two hours to try its burgers. Meanwhile, Wendy’s plans to open as many as 1,000 franchised restaurants in China over the next decade.
Why are burgers so popular in China?
Their affordability, speed, and convenience fit the changing habits of young workers, smaller households, and consumers seeking practical meal options.
