Amen Thompson has secured his long-term future with the Houston Rockets after agreeing to a five-year, $208 million contract extension, reinforcing his status as one of the franchise’s most important young players. The deal will keep Thompson in Houston through the 2031-32 NBA season and includes a 10% trade kicker.

The 23-year-old guard was selected by the Rockets with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and has steadily improved during his first three seasons. His development reached another level in the 2025-26 campaign, when he averaged 18.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game while leading the NBA in minutes played.

Thompson has also established himself as one of Houston’s strongest defensive players, giving the team versatility on both ends of the court. His ability to play multiple guard positions became especially valuable last season.

Why did the Rockets make such a significant investment in Thompson?

Houston sees his defensive impact, athleticism and continued offensive development as key elements of its long-term plans.

The extension also strengthens the Rockets’ young core alongside Alperen Şengün, Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason, giving the franchise a foundation to compete for years to come.
