A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday, causing severe damage to homes and buildings, landslides, and an emergency that has mobilized rescue teams. The epicenter was located off the island of Flores, in East Nusa Tenggara province, about 68 kilometers northwest of Ende.
Authorities initially reported dozens of victims, but the latest death toll has risen to at least 47 people, while search and rescue operations continue in the hardest-hit areas. Numerous injuries and damage to hundreds of homes have also been reported.
The powerful earthquake also triggered a tsunami warning that was later lifted. Waves of up to approximately 1.6 meters were recorded in some areas. Emergency teams are facing difficulties reaching isolated communities because of landslides, blocked roads, and communication problems.
