China faces a mountain of used batteries after Its electric vehicle boom

Fabio Guerrero

For years, China led the electric vehicle revolution and became the world’s largest market for EV technology. However, that success is now creating a new challenge: millions of batteries are reaching the end of their useful lives.

Experts estimate that by 2030, more than one million tons of batteries will be retired each year, posing significant environmental and logistical challenges for the Asian nation. Recycling and repurposing these batteries have become top priorities in order to prevent pollution and recover valuable materials such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt.

Government agencies and technology companies are already developing new solutions to manage the growing volume of battery waste, while the rest of the world closely watches how China addresses one of the biggest side effects of the global energy transition.

Why is the increase in discarded batteries a concern?

Because they contain materials that can be harmful to the environment if not handled properly, but they also hold valuable resources that can be recovered through specialized recycling processes.
