Amid the respiratory illness season, health specialists have drawn attention to the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a virus that causes numerous infections in Mexico every year. Although it is not new, health authorities warn that it can lead to respiratory illnesses similar to the common cold and particularly affect young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

The virus spreads in ways similar to other respiratory pathogens, through droplets released when a person coughs, sneezes, or talks, as well as through contact with contaminated surfaces. The most common symptoms include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and sore throat, though in some cases it may lead to complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia.

Specialists note that even though the virus circulates every year, there is still no specific vaccine available to prevent it. For this reason, they recommend basic preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and maintaining good ventilation in indoor spaces.

Is human metapneumovirus dangerous?

In most cases it causes mild symptoms similar to a cold, but it can lead to more serious illness in babies, older adults, or people with weakened immune systems.
