An aircraft belonging to the Mexican Navy that was carrying out a humanitarian medical mission crashed on December 22 near Galveston, Texas, leaving at least five people dead, including a two-year-old child, according to Mexican authorities and the United States Coast Guard.

The twin-engine King Air ANX-1209 aircraft was transporting eight people, including four naval officers, civilian personnel, and a young child with severe burns, as part of a coordinated effort with the Michou y Mau Foundation, which helps transfer children with serious burns to the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Galveston.

Rescue teams located the aircraft in Galveston Bay, where dense fog complicated search and recovery operations. So far, two people have been rescued alive, one remains missing, and the cause of the crash is still under investigation by the United States and Mexican aviation authorities.

What is known so far about the cause of the crash?

There is no confirmed cause yet, but authorities have not ruled out that heavy fog and a loss of communication minutes before impact may have played a significant role in the tragedy.
