A wave of political backlash is rising in Germany as several prominent lawmakers demand the resignation of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen following the announcement of a controversial trade agreement with the United States. Critics have labeled the deal “a trap” that compromises Europe’s economic sovereignty.

The transatlantic agreement, signed to prevent U.S. tariffs of up to 50%, has sparked outrage not only in Germany but also in France. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and various conservative leaders argue the deal concedes too much to Washington and undermines national interests. In France, opposition leaders have gone as far as calling it a form of “submission” that distances the EU from its goal of strategic autonomy.

French political figure Marine Le Pen called the agreement a “political, economic, and moral fiasco,” while former Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin warned that Europe is “paying tribute” to the U.S., accepting unfair tariffs and energy commitments that favor American industries.

Why are they demanding her resignation?

Critics argue the agreement heavily favors the United States. While Europe agreed to lower import restrictions, the U.S. kept high tariffs on key sectors like steel and automobiles. Moreover, new energy commitments are seen as compromising Europe’s climate goals and sovereignty.

Conclusion:

Although von der Leyen still has the backing of centrist parties in the European Parliament, the pressure is mounting and a no-confidence motion could be on the horizon. The situation exposes growing tensions between national governments and the European Commission, and raises serious questions about the EU’s long-term strategy in its relationship with the U.S.
